What is functional septorhinoplasty?
Functional septorhinoplasty is nasal surgery designed primarily to improve breathing when obstruction involves more than the internal septum. It may address the septum, nasal valves, bony framework, tip support or other structural elements of the nose.
Why combine function and structure?
The internal airway and the external nasal framework are closely related. Correcting a severely deviated or weakened nose can require structural changes that also influence appearance. A careful pre-operative discussion therefore covers both breathing goals and anticipated visible changes.
Open and closed approaches
Mr Omakobia has fellowship and consultant experience in both open and closed septorhinoplasty. The choice of approach depends on anatomy, previous surgery, the required manoeuvres and individual goals.
Grafts and support
Cartilage grafts may be used to strengthen or reshape parts of the nasal framework. The source and purpose of any graft are discussed before surgery.
